Georgia to Maine - - Please join me from start (4/1) to finish (8/10) - 132 days!!!!!

Bethlehem, NH
I have completed my thru-hike of the AT from Georgia to Maine; I started 4/1 and completed 8/10/10. I decided to do this thru-hike in memory of my brother Michael and in turn decided to turn it into a fundraiser. All money raised went to the Adaptive Sports Partners of the North Country which gives year-round opportunities in sports and recreation to people with physical or developmental disabilities. My wife Pam and I got involved with this program because it allows us to help people with disabilities enjoy the outdoors like we do and my brother Michael did. Michael was born mentally challenged, and he loved to visit us in the North Country of NH and go hiking. He also loved the outdoors and did many other sports. So, to help others do this and other outdoor activities is a TRIBUTE to him, and an HONOR to us. Many of you have helped me along my journey and donated (follow donation link) directly to a secure website. All donations have gone and WILL CONTINUE to go to ASPNC – nonprofit org to help assist others to hike, ski, kayak, snow shoe..etc… Thank you all in advance for your kindness & generosity, Dave & Pam Smith

Monday 5/31

Early to rise. Breakfast and out the door. Sue & Jere will join PTD on the trail today.

Saw a bear near the trail, deer. Something funny! Later in the day PTD almost walked into one of the deer after he filled his water bottle. The deer was just there. Later that night they also had deer hanging out at their campsite watching them eat dinner. Hoping for some I am sure. Not afraid of people in the SNP.

Pontail and the Flying Scotsmen reached the 900 mile mark today.  Sue & Jere were there w/them as they crossed the mark.  Yahoo!

They stayed at Big Meadows Campground – very nice campground. Not primitive. They had bath houses. PTD just loves those flush toilets.

PTD, Sue, Jere and the Flying Scotsmen all did 17 miles today. Way to go!!! Hard day for them but they kept right up. PTD really didn’t slow his pace for the newbies. They are really great sports. He says he would hike w/them again in a heartbeat!

thru hiking the AT is like running a marathon in the morning-having lunch-then running another marathon-oh-plus you have a 40 lb backpack on...oh-your climbing mountains 1/2 the time-you stop for the nite-put up your tent-heat up something freeze dried for dinner-sleep(pass out) get up-pack up all your stuff-and do it all over again and again etc you get the picture...ptd and all those hikers are absolutely amazing...focused and drawing on a inner strength that I am in total awe of!!!

I can understand why ptd likes those flush toilets-we stopped for lunch at a shelter with a-wooden sort of job johnny- you are pratically slammed back against the door when the odor hits ya (i really really had to go) I brought my own tp-so I quickly shoved a wad of it up each nostril- gaggin! so I'm sittn there-breathing through my mouth with the ends of the tp shooved up my nose blowin in and out of my mouth with each inhale and exhale and I just started laughin when I thought of what a picture that would make. soo anyway i understand why ptd loves those flush toilets go thru hikers-love ya
